Jamie's at Marlands Shopping Centre.

Our two week stint selling laptops etc. from a carousel at Marlands (courtesy of the hard work of Lauren
Wileman from Fundraising) was very successful. This has been profitable for Jamie’s, with £10,500 taken in the two week period. In addition to the money taken, this exposure has brought us to the attention of many more people in the city. The next challenge for Jamie’s will be to build on this exposure and take advantage of our higher profile with people in Southampton.

Thank you to Jane, Ali, Glenn, Dave Harris and Dave Manvell for helping to prepare all the equipment for sale. Thank you to all the following for helping to staff the carousel, with particular thanks to Dave Manvell for his
herculean effort of working 13 full days over the 14 day period: Karen and Dave Manvell, Dave Harris, Lauren, Sam, Fen, Andy and Clare Powell, Glenn, Lizi and Jane Duncan.

Computer Aid International

We're continuing to work with Computer Aid International to send more refurbished computers to the developing world. The computers are put to
use where they're needed most. They're used in thousands of schools
benefiting many hundreds of thousands of students. And it's not
just schools; the PCs are also being used to enhance the capacity of not-for-profit organizations.

Computer haul will benefit city’s homeless

TRADING Standards officers in Southampton have donated most of their largest ever seizure of goods to a local homelessness charity.

Following complaints from the public who had bought defective computer games, officers raided an address in Bitterne and uncovered a slick Web-based operation supplying kits to download counterfeit Nintendo games.

Laptops, memory cards, games, console hard drives and other equipment worth £180,000 were seized and the website was closed.

Cabinet member for environment and transport Councilor Matt Dean, accompanied by Trading Standards officers, presented most of the haul to Jamie’s Computers, a division of the city’s largest homelessness charity, The Society of St James.

They will delete software from the laptops, which will then be put to good use, and sell the memory cards, USB adaptors and other items for legitimate use.

The money will help to run the charity, which provides training and employment opportunities to socially excluded adults in Southampton through business enterprise.

Trevor Pickup, managing director of Jamie’s Computers, said: “We really do rely on the generosity of the public and we are very grateful to Southampton City Council for donating this equipment to us.
“It will help to pay for Jamie’s Computers to keep going.”

We're all a Twitter!

If you've watched the news, read a paper or listened to the radio in the last month, then I'm sure you'll have heard all about Twitter and how widely it is being used.  Not only as a social networking tool, but also by businesses who use it to stay in touch with customers and promote products and services.

We've jumped on the band wagon too, and we're using Twitter to spread the word about our work.  We're also using it to stay in touch with our customers and supporters.

If you're using Twitter, please look us up.  We can then keep you informed of the latest news at Jamie's, as well as learn more about you and your business.

When the Cabinet Came to Town

Jamie’s Computers was one of 14 organisations in the region to receive a ministerial visit, when Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his Cabinet descended on Southampton on Monday 23rd February.
Jamie’s welcomed Liam Byrne, Minister for the Cabinet Office to its operation in Northam as part of the ministerial visits which took place in the region.

Minister Liam Byrne said:

“Jamie’s Computers is a great example of how social enterprises can benefit the local community and the country as a whole. It’s clear to me that they give vulnerable people real opportunities to realise their potential and get on in life, regardless of their circumstances.

“In this tough economic climate we need businesses like this that put ethics first. This way we can all build a fairer society and a stronger country.”

The visit followed this month’s announcement of the Government’s Third Sector Action Plan, which has been designed together with third sector leaders over the last three months and builds on the wide range of measures the Government has put in place to support people through the economic downturn, and on the Government’s long term commitment to voluntary organisations and social enterprises.

Della Cunio, Operations Director for Jamie’s said of the visit:

“We were delighted to learn that the Minister would visit the project – it was a great compliment to the work that we do and a proud moment for all the staff and service users involved.

“The importance of social enterprise in the provision of public service and contribution to the economy is recognised by government and keenly promoted. We were pleased to be able to provide a positive case study for the Minister.”
